Scores of the sick in Aboh, Ahiazu and Ezinihitte local council areas of Imo State, have benefited from free healthcare courtesy of Mbaise USA Medical Mission
The visiting medical team toured various communities including Ekwereazu, Ife, Uvuru, Umuoda, Lorji and Umuhu Okwuato, treating and counselling patients free of charge.
In a chat at St. Gregory’s Catholic Parish, Umuhu Okwuato venue of the medical outreach, a Senior Consulting Physician and Umuhu Team Leader, Dr.
Vitalis Ojiegbe, said they encountered hypertensive and diabetic patients. There were also people with high cholesterol, arthritis, back pain, malaria and abdominal disorders.
“We also carried out surgical procedures for hernia, appendicitis, thyroid and a number of other cases, free of charge”, Ojiegbe said. Free surgeries, lab tests He explained that all the surgeries were carried out at Aboh Mbaise General Hospital, adding that the patients enjoyed free laboratory tests and appropriate drugs were dispensed free of charge, accordingly. Ojiegbe, who said the group has different chapters in the 52 states of the US, also stressed that the yearly medical mission was one of the ways of assisting their kith and kin at home.
“The medical mission was not bankrolled by either the United States Government, the Federal or Imo State Governments. It is rather a collective effort of philanthropists, who are determined to render humanitarian services to our people at home. It would be unpardonable for us to stand and watch people die of treatable ailments”, Ojiegbe said. Giving insight about future plans, the Team Leader said that they were already working on the possibility of fully resuscitating Aboh Mbaise General Hospital, as well as sustaining the yearly exercise till date. According to the President, Mbaise Family Union, North Carolina, Nkem Ukpabi,
“This project is important to us because we have discovered that a lot of people have continued to die as a result of their inability to afford the cost of the simplest medicare. If we can help them get back their health, they can do other things themselves.”
